A small selection of media appearances and press coverage of me and my work.
When I announced my departure from Meredith Corporation several months after it acquired Time Inc., the trade press covered the moment, noting the growth in audience and market share of my brands during my tenure.
For Visit California’s podcast, I spoke to host Soterios Johnson about my recent road trip through Mendocino County.
For more than a decade, Travel + Leisure has produced an annual listing of the world’s top travel advisors. In 2018, to enter into deeper partnership with the recommended advisors and provide a business justification for a time- and labor-intensive initiative that had not been previously monetized, we transformed the A-List into a membership program. After a thorough editorial vetting, the advisors chosen are invited to join the A-List collection for a fee, in exchange for a host of new benefits designed to connect them with the T+L audience and support their business. The program changes sparked some controversy in the industry—I disagreed strongly with critics—and I’ve collected some of the coverage here.
PS: The new A-List launched in August 2018 with more than 100 top-notch advisors, proving wrong the concerns some had that the group would decline in scope and quality. And the new program successfully generated significant incremental revenue for the brand, turning what had been a cost center into a profitable enterprise.
April 2018 and earlier
Each year, Travel Weekly convenes a group of travel editors for a thoughtful roundtable discussion on the industry, media, consumers, and more. I participated each of my years as Travel + Leisure’s Editor in Chief.
New York Magazine
Following the release of Travel + Leisure’s Ultimate Travel Essentials, a feature on the favorite products of T+L’s editors associated with the brand’s new eCommerce vertical, I talked to New York Magazine’s The Strategist about the things I can’t travel without myself.
In 2017, Travel + Leisure launched Operation Vacation, a new program designed to encourage Americans to use all their vacation days each year. (More than 600 million days go unused annually.) I spoke to Public Radio’s Marketplace program about the new initiative.
The popular design site did a House Tour of the Brooklyn apartment my husband and I had renovated and were living in at the time. (We’ve since moved, after renovating another home, also in Brooklyn.)
When Travel + Leisure found itself at the center of a controversy around an advertisement we ran from Hilton Hotels featuring two men in bed together, I wrote a personal response on TravelandLeisure.com about what the ad meant to me, why I was proud to run it, and why I was proud of Hilton for creating it. Adweek covered the moment.
In 2016, Travel + Leisure relaunched its digital guides to popular destinations around the world in an effort to better serve travelers in the research and planning stages of their journey. That summer, we also introduced the T+L Travel Guides app, to provide those guides in a form that would facilitate discovery and decision-making for travelers in location. MediaPost covered the release of the app.
Time Inc. reorg coverage
Various, July 2016
In the summer of 2016, Time Inc. significantly reorganized its corporate structure. I took on an expanded role, continuing as Editor in Chief of Travel + Leisure while taking on oversight of the company’s other lifestyle titles, including Food & Wine, Southern Living, and Real Simple. Within a few months, I added an additional title, Departures, and oversaw 10 titles in total as Editorial Director of the Time Inc. Luxury & Lifestyle Group. Here’s a bit of the coverage:
I sat down for the B2B travel site’s podcast to discuss the future of media in the travel space.
Following terrorist attacks in Brussels, Belgium, I wrote a piece for TravelandLeisure.com on why I believed travel to be more important than ever. It resonated with travelers and was widely shared on social media, and I spoke to WNYC’s Brian Lehrer about my point of view.
T+L relaunch coverage
Various, spring 2015
In April 2015 we relaunched the print edition of Travel + Leisure and TravelandLeisure.com simultaneously—setting the brand on a path of audience and revenue growth across platforms. Here’s a cross-section of the broad interest generated at that time.
